Sound Chapel proves to have magnificent acoustics

Cobar’s Sound Chapel, the dream of one
of Australia’s leading composers and sound
artists, Georges Lentz, is all but complete.
Built in the old abandoned Silver Tank just
out of town, the Sound Chapel began as an
idea of Georges back in 2008.
This unique project is now close to being
finished and Georges is “over the moon” with
how the Chapel looks and sounds.
“I really could not be any happier with the
result, and also the excellent work by Cynend
on what was a rather tricky build,” Georges
told The Cobar Weekly.
“The acoustics are magnificent – atmospheric
yet clear.”
He said they have carried out preliminary
testing of the music in the space and it sounds
wonderful.
“Some of the sound is very spacious and
peaceful and relatively easy to ‘get’, but some
of it might also be a bit challenging to some,”
Georges explained.
“It is a 21st century artwork with its delights
and challenges.
“It is a digital artwork, very much of our
time, imbued with what I like to call the
‘technological sublime’ evolved from the
beauties and complexities of our world and of
astronomy in particular.
“It’s not necessarily ‘easy listening’ all the
time, perhaps hopefully more along the lines
of ‘rewarding listening’.
“The vast complexity of it will, in my opinion,
give the work a longer life in people’s
imaginations than a bit of ‘pop fluff’”.

Georges estimates the full program of music
will be installed within the next month and
hopes an official opening/launch will be held
within the next few months.
