Cobar held its Annual Veteran’s Golf day in conjunction with the Western Districts Veteran’s Championships on Friday.

It was a great day for golf and Cobar turned on its best weather for players to enjoy.

The club’s curator Paul Hay had the course (although dry) in good condition with plenty of run, just right for big scores.

Sadly, numbers were well down this year but that didn’t affect the players who travelled from places like Orange, Coonabarabran, Narromine and Warren.

The overall men’s winner on the day with a five-over score of 76 was local boy Max Phillips. (Fortunately for other Cobar golfers, Max was to play in Hillston on the Saturday and Sunday, meaning they wouldn’t have to be constantly reminded of Phillip’s success for at least another week.)

Sally Bannister won the ladies event with a score of 88 off the stick.

In First Division, the winner in the men was John Martin from Warren with a score of 40 points, followed by Steve Manns, 36 points and Peter Brien, also 36 points.

In the ladies, the first division winner was Gerry Francisco with 36 points followed by Barb Barklimore on 33 points and Fay Hardwick in third place, also on 33 points.

The men’s second division winner with 40 points was Colin ‘Butch’ Eves, followed by Ray Yench on 37 and Kev Noonen from Warren on 34 points.

Nearest the Pins were won by: John Martin the 3rd hole, Peter Brien 7th, Max Phillips 8th and 11th and Ray Yench 15th.

In the ladies, the winners were: Barb Barklimore 3rd and 7th holes, Sue Phillips 8th, Fay Hardwick 11th and Sally Bannister 15th.

At the presentations Doug Price (representing major sponsor Peak Gold Mines) handed out trophies. Other sponsors were the Western Districts Veteran Golf Association, The John Mitchell Pharmacy, WesTrac Cobar and Cobar Bowling & Golf Club.Out of Bounds
