Old Boys give a helping hand

Newcastle Waratahs Rugby Union Old Boys Club president Hugh ‘Reg’ Jarvis (third from left) caught up with Cobar Rugby Old Boys Peter Payne, Bill Houghton, Terry Dunne, Kevin ‘Rusty’ Mitchell and Kel Ellicott on Friday night at the Great Western Hotel. Jarvis, who originally toured Cobar with his Newcastle team in 1978, returned to show support for local retired rugby players who are living on the land and doing it tough in the drought. While he was already helping to support the Buy a Bale program, Jarvis said he felt compelled to visit. “We wanted to physically come out and let them know that, while we may be in a city centre, we are thinking of them and they’re not forgotten,” he said. With donations from his friends in the rugby community, Jarvis was able to help five local farming families with cash payments towards their Landmark accounts, IGA vouchers and rugby memorabilia.
