Firefighting crews have been working around the clock since last Thursday trying to contain a bushfire near Mount Hope in the south of the shire.

The fire at Yarra station, Tipping Way, east of Mount Hope, was reported at approximately 2.20pm on Thursday.

NSW Rural Fire Service crews, along with  National Parks & Wildlife Service firefighters, with the assistance of some heavy plant equipment (graders, bulldozers and a bulk water tanker) from Cobar Shire and local contractors, have been working to contain the fire.

NSW RFS Far West Team District Manager Brad Lennon reports that as of Monday night, a total of 7,016ha had been burnt out and, at that stage, the fire was still burning.

“Using ground crews in conjunction with heavy machinery and some favourable weather conditions, we’ve been successful in strategic back burning,” Mr Lennon said.

He said they have some concerns with changing wind directions which came in yesterday morning.

RFS crews were also called out at around 1.20pm on Saturday to a fire on a property approximately 40km south of Cobar.

The property owner reported a tractor caught fire which caused a grassfire and then developed into a bushfire.

The RFS Geandale and Cobar Headquarters brigades were assisted by Fire and Rescue NSW crews to bring the fire under control which they did just before 6pm.

Approximately 60.5ha of cropping paddock was burnt out and the tractor was destroyed.
