Three local pool lifeguards have been recognised with special commendations in a ceremony at Government House in Sydney on Monday for displaying
outstanding initiative and empathy to others.
Bridgette Jones and her two sons, Thomas and Raymond, were presented with Royal Life Saving NSW Certificates of Commendation in recognition of the roles
they played in an emergency situation at Cobar Memorial Swimming Pool earlier this year.
On January 17, Mrs Jones was the Manager on Duty at the pool, Thomas was working as a lifeguard and Raymond was working in the canteen.
Around 11.30am an older man who had been swimming laps was observed to suddenly go under water suffering a suspected heart attack.
Thomas, with the aid of a bystander, helped to remove the man from the water and Mrs Jones checked his vital signs.
Thomas then commenced CPR while Raymond phoned for an ambulance and made an announcement to clear the pool.
At paramedics request, Thomas was asked to continue CPR until the man could be stabilised.
The man was then conveyed to Cobar Hospital for further treatment.
While the man unfortunately passed away, the Royal Life Saving society has acknowledged the efforts of Mrs Jones and her sons with High Commendations.
The trio were presented with their awards at a special ceremony at Government House in Sydney on Monday afternoon by His Excellency The Honourable Thomas Bathurst AC, Lieutenant Governor of NSW.
