Work is currently underway on the construction of a new tennis court in Nymagee.

Cobar Shire Council has been working with the Nymagee Tennis Club and Nymagee Progress Association to add a third court to the Nymagee tennis complex.

Council’s special projects officer Angela Shepherd said council was successful in obtaining a Sport and Recreation grant to form up and seal the tennis court and replace the lighting and fence around the existing courts.

“Tennis is very strong in Nymagee and the village is one of the few small communities where tennis continues to play a very important role in the community,” Ms Shepherd said.

“There are two bitumised courts that they currently play on but with strong numbers, the community was keen to have a third court available.

“They play a general competition on Saturdays and a women’s competition every second Tuesday, and both are well supported.”

Work to date has seen the lighting replaced and the third court has been formed up.

“This week a contractor from Dubbo will be on site to lay a new synthetic surface,” Ms Shepherd reported.

“It will take five days to complete the project, including line marking.”

She said while the contractor is in Nymagee he will also undertake maintenance work on the cricket pitch adjacent to the courts.

She said the fence will then be replaced.

“It was very badly in need of replacement.

“It was taken down some time ago when we started the project to allow access to the site, and the players have been getting fit chasing the balls so I’m sure they are very much looking forward to the project being completed!”
