Retrenched workers from Endeavor Mine who attended a Redundancy Support Session in Cobar last week report it was a very useful session.

Coordinated by the Cobar Business Association, the support session at the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club last Wednesday was aimed at retrenched workers and their partners.

It provided information on local job opportunities, training options, counselling information and financial help.

Cobar Business Association president Sharon Harland said while there was only a low number of affected workers and their partners in attendance, those who did attend told her they had gotten a lot out of it.

“After listening to an overview from each of the 10 service providers, the workers and their partners were then able to ask questions in a one-on-one situation.

“This ensured they were able to speak confidentially to financial planners, bankers, HR officers or a counsellor if they chose to,” Mrs Harland said.

One worker who attended the session said he’d gotten a couple of new ideas for work leads which has encouraged him to possibly take a new career path.

The partner of another retrenched worker said both her and her husband had found the session to be very worthwhile.

“We got a lot out of it and will get a lot out of it in the future,” she said.

Others said they were pleased to hear of the State Government’s offer of fee free training and were keen to upgrade their skills while they were “in between jobs”.

All of the 10 service providers who attended the support session said they had also received good feedback and were pleased to have been able to help the workers and their families.
